AMOI A660 Mobile Cell Phone with DV Camcorder

Cell phones these days have everything from digital cameras, mp3 players to FM radios, so why stop there? Chinese manufacturer AMOI, has released their model A660 mobile phone with flip out display and DV camcorder functionality. Being a DV camcorder is no amazing feat, but the display’s flipping mechanism allows the user to control the camera as if they were using a standard DV camcorder (since the lens is mounted on the side of the phone, rather then the back side).

Looking more at the of the A660, I found that it supports a “T Card”, this could mean T-Flash, but that has been discontinued and is now the MicroSD. But there is definitely support for expandable memory, the 12MB available internal memory would hardly be enough for video recording. Which is done recorded at 25FPS at 352x288, encoding is with 3GP. The still camera uses a 1.3 megapixel imaging sensor, battery life is in and around 3-5 hours of talk time and 120 hours standby.

The AMOI A660 measures 106x47.5x19mm and weighs 98.7g including the “T Card”. Connectivity is through GSM, Dual band support which means it will most likely be for Asia and Europe, but our sources indicate that a tri-band model has been developed, which is very good news. The price of the A660, a mere ¥ 2580 (US $320).

O2 confirms 3G, Wi-Fi smart phone

O2 UK has formally announced the O2 XDA Exec, the network's own-brand version of HTC's Universal 3G clamshell smart phone

The device, which is based on Windows Mobile 5.0 and incorporates 802.11b Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 1.2 and GPRS connectivity in addition to 3G, was spotted in an O2 brochure earlier this month, though at time time O2 remained silent on the matter.

Not now. Today, it touted the device's 520MHz Intel XScale PXA272 processor; 64MB of RAM; 128MB of Flash ROM; 3.6in, 65,536-colour, 640 x 480 display; SDIO slot for expansion; and its 1.2 megapixel camera with flash, alongside a second video-call camera.

O2 said the Exec's 1620mAh removable battery provides sufficient charge for four hours' 3G talk time, eight hours' tri-band GSM talk time, 15 hours' usage as a PDA and 250 hours' stand-by time.

Orange is expected to release its version of the Universal, which it's calling the SPV M5000, shortly. i-mate's version, the Jasjar, is already on sale, as is T-Mobile Germany's version, the MDA Pro.

O2 has also announced the XDA SP, a tri-band candy-bar smart phone based on Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone Edition Second Edition. Essentially, it's the HTC Hurricane, better known as the Orange SPV C550. The 102g handset sports a 2.2in, 65,536-colour display and contains 64MB of ROM and 32MB of RAM. There's a Mini SD slot for memory expansion, and it's got Bluetooth 1.1 on board. There's also a 1.3 megapixel digicam with 4x digital zoom.

The O2 XDA Exec will retail at £400, depending on the monthly contract and tariff selected. O2 did not provide a price for the XDA SP. ®

CELLPHONE FOR IPOD PEOPLE

September 8, 2005 -- Apple Computers yesterday unleashed the world's first iTunes-equipped cellphone — instantly establishing the elec- tronic gadget as the new must-have of the season.

In Apple's typical over-the-top fashion, CEO Steve Jobs announced the new phone at an elaborately staged media event featuring Madonna and Kanye West — sparking near-hysteria among Apple's hard-core fan base, which had been speculating for weeks after photos of the new phone were leaked on the Internet.

The new toy sent Apple fanatics swooning.

"Apple amazes . . . again," wrote one breathless blogger. ...

New cellphone has iTunes built in

he first cellphone to double-up as an iPod music player went on sale in the US on Wednesday. It was unveiled by Apple at a last-minute, invitation-only press conference in San Francisco.

The ROKR, pronounced “rocker”, looks like a normal silver cellphone, weighs just over 1 gram and stores 100 songs and audio-files on a minuscule, removable flash memory card. Files stored using the iTunes music software can be downloaded from a PC by plugging the phone into its USB port.

The idea, a joint venture between phone maker Motorola, Apple and US phone service provider Cingular Wireless, is to merge two popular portable devices – the cellphone and the iPod – into one, while adding the capability to listen to music while texting, instant messaging, playing games or web surfing.

“Fusing iTunes with your always-with-you mobile phone, the ROKR represents the ultimate convergence of mobile communications and music,” says Ed Zander, chairman and CEO of Motorola.

Well-rounded

I've never cared much for camera phones. Those grainy, murky low-res photos just didn't do it for me.

The K750i has changed my view. It's a 2-megapixel camera phone, more accurately described as a mobile phone wrapped around a very capable 2-megapixel digital camera.

Not only are the pictures surprisingly clear for a phone with a fixed lens, it also shoots video clips with sound, has a bright built-in flash and removable memory courtesy of a Memory Stick Duo slot.

Slide open the lens cover on the back of the handset and the camera mode is activated. There are three photo resolutions, topping out at 1632 x 1224 pixels. Incredibly, it offers additional shooting aids such as panorama and continuous 4-frame burst. The latter is useful for taking pictures of pets and children, and getting over the problem of the two-second shutter lag. There are also macro and night modes and a 4x digital zoom.

Its other talent is music playback, supporting MP3, MP4, 3GP and WAV audio formats. It comes with a decent stereo headset that doubles as a hands-free.

The phone has 32MB of memory internally, but a 64MB Duo card is supplied to store extra photos, videos or music. One gripe is that the sliding lens cover adds a bit of bulk. Bluetooth and infra-red are both included. This is as well-rounded a phone as you could possibly hope for and it just grows on you the more you use it
